Stray Kids has released a new album and so it was time for some Stray Kids fanart! And when I saw the reference photo for this drawing of Felix I just knew it’s was going to be my next reference! This is also probably the portrait I’ve used the most colored pencils in for a long time. As some of you know I’m a big fan of using mixed media, partly because it speeds up the process, but also because using markers and panpastel as a base layer makes the colored pencils look smoother. For a while my portraits looked incredibly streaky because I used the wrong technique. With panpastel, different paper and better technique it has become smoother, but I still haven’t felt like I’ve been able to get a somewhat smooth or even dark enough result with colored pencils only. Because if that I haven’t really tried, and so my technique has developed slower. Until recently. When I started using colored pencils I learned that one should use sharp pencils to get into the crevices of the paper, even for the first layers, and so I’ve been rotating the pencils a few degrees regularly to keep the point sharp. Well, that was until now. By accident I kept using the pencil until it got a chisel tip. The effect of using a chisel tip is similar to using the side of the pencil, but you got more control of it as you can use it in the same angle as you normally would. While I’ve had problems getting the values dark enough on fine tooth paper without markers or panpastel before since I haven’t been able to add enough layers, I discovered it was really no problem at all if I had drawn the initial layers with a chisel tip. I’ve still used a sharp tip for blending and burnishing (and of course details), but for me, this was such a game changer. I’ve even rendered the black parts of the suit and the tie with colored pencils only. So even if it doesn’t look as smooth as with markers and panpastel as base layers, it is a lot smoother than it has previoualy looked with colored pencils only and I’m very proud of that! What do you think? And what do you think of 특 5-Star album by Stray Kids? #straykids #straykidsfanart #leefelix #kpopfanart #skz #felix #skzfanart @Stray Kids
